A recent snap of cooler weather has forced the manatees of Southwest Florida to concentrate
in the warm-water refuges of the Orange River and in other waterways of Lee and Collier counties.
As a result, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is urging boaters to be on the lookout for manatees moving into the main channels of the Caloosahatchee River and the traditional feeding grounds of Matlacha Pass and San Carlos Bay.
Most of the heavily populated manatee areas have special speed zones. …
